We are happy to take this opportunity to highlight the commonalities between indigenous, ancient, and modern natural healing practices, and to celebrate the long-standing history of plant-based medicine.
Elderberry or Sambucus species are found in Africa, Europe, and the Americas and date back to 10,000 B.C. Already the ancient Greeks appreciated elderberry's medicinal benefits with Hippocrates, the “father of medicine”, referring to the plant as his “medicine chest”.
In the 9th century, Charlemagne encouraged the planting of elderberry bushes throughout his vast western and central European empire. Sambucus Nigra was revered as a sacred plant, provided food and medicine, and was believed to protect against illness, bad luck, and disaster.
For Native Americans, elderberry was and is one of the most important traditional medicines. All parts of the plant, including roots, wood, bark, berry, leaves, and flower are being used and harvested at specific times of the year.
Tea and poultices help reduce fevers, colds, the flu, pain from sprains, and more. It is good to remember that the healing traditions and alternative practices of Indigenous and ancient cultures continue in natural medicine today.
