What Is the History of Homeopathic Remedies?

Homeopathy is a form of natural medicine practiced worldwide, but not many are aware of the history of homeopathic remedies and their gentle way of healing. Find out more about homeopathy’s fascinating history.

How It Started

The history of homeopathic remedies begins in the 1700s. German physician Samuel Hahnemann experimented with two new principles: the Law of Similars and the Minimum Dose. The Law of Similars involves the use of effects to counteract similar effects. The Minimum Dose uses minute doses to instigate our body’s own healing response.

For example, the Cinchona tree bark Hahnemann ingested himself created symptoms identical to malaria. This led him to conclude that effective remedies will create feelings similar to an illness in healthy people, and supplying small doses of that remedy may help a sick person get better. He published The Organon of the Art of Healing in 1810 and spread his findings to others who began to utilize this holistic method.

The Development of Remedies

During epidemics such as the European cholera outbreak in the 19th century, people turned to homeopathic practitioners and hospitals because conventional hospitals used dangerous methods for a patient's recovery, such as extensive bloodletting and mercury poisoning, which often led to increased suffering and even death. Homeopathy was a better option due to its safer practices.

Homeopathic remedies picked up in popularity in the U.S. around 1825 when Hahnemann's student, Hans Burch Gram, returned to America and published the first booklet on homeopathy. Two decades later, the American Institute of Homeopathy was established, leading to a rise in homeopathic institutions and thousands of practitioners.

How We Use Remedies Today

In the 20th century, conventional medicine—the form of medicine practiced by most physicians and in the majority of hospitals today—grew at a rapid pace, pushing natural healing methods aside. By the 1970s, interest in holistic solutions had increased again. Homeopathy, along with Ayurvedic medicine, yoga, acupuncture, and other nature-based modalities, continue to be in high demand.

Homeopathy works well for countless people seeking natural solutions to relieve pain, colds, coughs, allergies, and anxiety, to name just a few of today’s most common health concerns. If you are looking to strengthen your immunity, nutrient absorption, and overall health, homeopathy presents excellent options. At HomeopathyStore, we are proud of our pure and convenient, high-quality homeopathic remedies and Schuessler cell salts all made here in the U.S.

The history of homeopathy goes back more than 200 years when a gentler, more natural approach to medicine and healing was needed. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann created remedies with trace amounts of active ingredients that trigger the body’s own healing propensities, and over two centuries have established a very high record of safety.
