The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the front and base of the neck. It produces important hormones - the main two being triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) - which play a significant role for the metabolism and greatly affect our energy output and overall health.
Thyroid hormones control how the body uses fat, carbohydrates, and protein, regulate body temperature, and influence the heart rate. These hormones are produced from the compounds iodine and tyrosine found in seaweed and animal protein respectively. A difficulty in converting these compounds into T3 or T4 affects the metabolism and the maintenance and growth of the organs and systems.
The symptoms of an underactive thyroid often start out mild and increase as we age. These initial symptoms can be similar to those of CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome), or clinical depression and anxiety and are often misdiagnosed as such.
Although women over 60 years of age are more likely to suffer from hypothyroidism, anyone can be affected. If you experience any of the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism, it is important to speak to your healthcare provider about them.
If diagnosed with hypothyroidism, consider the following healthy lifestyle choices:
- Eat a healthy, high-fiber diet.
- Add kelp (seaweed) to your diet, which is rich in iodine, or consider taking an iodine supplement.
- Keep up a regualr exercise program.
- Practice stress control and relaxation.
- Get enough sleep.
