Schuessler Tissue Salts Primer Continued - The Natrum or Sodium Cell Salts
The 3 Natrum Cell Salts and How They Soothe Sinuses, Stomach, Joints, and More
We are continuing our Schuessler cell salts series with an introduction to the natrum or sodium minerals. A main component of salt, natrum or pure sodium is key to cellular health and an important mineral and electrolyte. While high amounts of processed sodium in modern-day packaged foods are rightfully causing alarm, natural sodium that occurs in fruits and vegetables and sea salt is essential to human health. Natural sodium has played a substantial role in every civilization’s cuisine and medicine, even politics and economics. Homer and Plato described it as divine substance. Dr. Schuessler’s Natrum salts help balance our body’s sodium, water, and vitamin levels. They are considered some of the most important home remedies to keep in your bedside drawer, pocketbook, and glove compartment, and treat everyday health conditions from soothing the respiratory and digestive system to contributing to joint and muscle health.
Natrum Muriaticum
Natrum Muriaticum (Cell Salt # 9) also known as Sodium Chloride regulates the distribution of bodily fluids. Excessive dryness or excessive moisture usually indicate a deficiency of Nat Mur. Among the many conditions it relieves are chronic sinus conditions and hay fever, headaches, migraines, constipation, cracked lips, cold sores, mouth ulcers, hang nails, slow digestion, hangover, and unrefreshed sleep. Also consider Nat Mur for stress and grief that develop after a loss or disappointment that hasn't been overcome (tears that have been held in). Nat Mur conditions improve in fresh air and are often linked to exposure to sun and heat and to hormonal changes.
Natrum Phosphoricum
Natrum Phosphoricum (Cell Salt #10) or Sodium Phosphate breaks down acids in the digestive organs as well as in muscles and joints. It relieves sensitivity to milk, fats, sweets, and vinegar, heartburn, indigestion, belching, gas, and diarrhea, and is an excellent remedy for colicky babies. As acid neutralizer, Nat Phos alleviates rheumatic symptoms, joint pain, lumbago, and stiff muscles.
Natrum Sulphuricum
Natrum Sulphuricum (Cell Salt #11) also known as Sodium Sulphate or Glauber's Salt – after 17th century apothecary, chemical engineer, and author Johann Rudolf Glauber – ensures the removal of waste fluids from the body which is necessary for the healthy functioning of the liver, critical to the later stages of digestion, and important in the treatment of rheumatic conditions. It is the principal tissue salt in treating the flu, alleviates colds with lots of yellow to green discharges and rattling cough, and relieves bitter taste in the mouth, nausea and vomiting. Nat Sulph conditions are aggravated by humid and cold weather and often accompanied by listlessness.
Foods that Support Healthy Sodium Balance
Consider getting much of the natural sodium you need from vegetables and fruits! Examples are Swiss chard, kale, turnip greens, beets, artichokes, spinach, celery, strawberries, and raisins. Add pinches of sea salt. Vegetables growing in ocean water such as seaweed and sea kelp contain natural salts as well as omega-3 fatty acids and many other minerals and nutrients.
